SUMMARY:Sound in Space\, Sound in Place
DESCRIPTION:Sound in Space\, Sound in Place\, a survey of contemporary sound art\, foregrounds sound and listening as powerful shapers of everyday experience and draws attention to sound’s unique properties as an artistic medium. \nCall for Sounds\nThe New Bedford Art Museum invites New Bedford residents to submit short recordings of the sounds that make up New Bedford’s unique “soundscape.” What are the sounds that make New Bedford familiar—like home? What sounds anchor you in place? What sounds would you miss if they suddenly went silent? We want to hear what you hear! NBAM will incorporate a selection of these sounds into an exhibition planned for April 2023\, as well as an interactive online map—scheduled to launch at the same time. \nSpecial Discussion\nApril 14\, 2023 6:00 – 7:30 pm\nExploration of Sound Spaces – A Survey\nJohn Driscoll and Phil Edelstein of Composers Inside Electronics will present views of a number of works that they have collaborated on over a 50-year period.

SUMMARY:Just Intonation and the World of Secret Sounds
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop with David First at FourOneOne\, Brooklyn\, NY \n • Is there a structured vibrational precision to the Universe?\n • Have you ever wondered why there are infinite shades of color but only 12 notes?\n • Is music theory more about politics & power than physics?\n • If microtonality implies infinite shades of pitch\, where to begin? Where to end?\n • Why can it be said that pitch & rhythm are the same thing? \nComposer/multi-instrumentalist David First (The Western Enisphere/Dave’s Waves Sonic Luncheonette/Notekillers) will explore\, explain\, and demonstrate the basic mathematical constructions behind the overtone series\, its recontextualization into various just intonation applications\, and show attendees the most practical methods for expressing these sounds on instruments not designed to play them. He will also introduce his concepts of Gestural Improvisation—methods for revealing a full scale of melodic values inside a half-step or even a single note\, correlations between poly-rhythmic activity and frequency ratios\, the virtuosity of slowness\, and the magic of difference/beating tones (or how 1+1=3). \nAttendees are requested to bring a laptop and their instruments. Everyone will be given a simple Max/MSP just intonation drone app for use during the workshop and further creative explorations after. \nTickets $25 until May 27th\, $30 thereafter.
