SUMMARY:Call for Submissions – Radio – A Space for Sonic Art
DESCRIPTION:ORGANISED SOUND \nCall for Submissions – Volume 29\, Number 1 \nIssue thematic title: “Radio – A Space for Sonic Art” \nDate of Publication: April 2024 \nPublishers: Cambridge University Press \nIssue co-ordinator: Michal Rataj (michal.rataj@hamu.cz) \nDeadline for submission: 15 May 2023 \n\n \n Call for Submissions – Radio – A Space for Sonic Art\n \n May 15\, 2023 -608 Pleasant Street\n \n	\n	New Bedford\,\n\n	MA\n\n	02740\n\n	United States\n \n \n \n Submission Deadline Passed\n \n \n \n Find out more\n \n \n\nBackground: \nSince the beginning of the 20th century radio as a medium has built all kinds of synapses in societies\, cultural practices and art discourses. Despite the fact that it was expected to be overshadowed by the rise of television\, it has continued to challenge norms within a wide variety of creativity across art disciplines. The internet has been questioning the position of radio again\, yet it is still radio as sound medium that provokes sonic imagination from surprising creative angles\, which do not only emerge from within public service environments. \nAcross the history of the radio medium we not only approach fascination with bi-directional communication\, but also an unprecedented subversive emphasis on aural approaches despite the continuously increasing visuality of the past century. Along with the history of radio we have been witnessing the rise of new studio technologies and distribution strategies\, which have not only influenced radical change regarding the listening experience\, but have also directly influenced the way artists make the art of sound (let’s call it music). New technologies and instruments have emerged from inside radio studios in order to reveal completely new timbral and spatial experiences of the work of composers\, poets\, theatre and film makers\, as well as visual artists. Listeners are part of a democratic “listening space for all” (Klaus Schöning 1997)\, while any distant spaces become part of the new radio space (F. T. Marinetti & Pino Masnata 1933). \nAlready at the beginning of public radio we can identify how differently traditional acoustic content had to be approached when being picked up by microphones inside the radio studio (Kurt Weill 1975). This directly influenced not only how new music started to be recorded but also what kinds of new sonic creativity were about to emerge\, including musique concrète\, Hörspiel\, sound poetry\, sound film\, soundscape and radio opera\, among many others. \nRadio as medium in contemporary art practice has developed from its primary purpose of sound distribution into a variety of creative and social strategies\, where sound has turned out to be the principal common denominator across creative disciplines\, social communities and cultural regions. At the threshold of the second quarter of the 21st century we are questioning the role of radio inside an intermedia discourse with respect to its history\, subversive social potential\, imaginative potential and audio creativity\, as well as its power to build bridges across communities of artists and listeners. \nThis issue of Organised Sound will be the first dedicated to sonic exploration by way of the radio medium over the decades\, as well as its future potential. \n\nTopics for investigation might include:\n• Historical aspects of radio with respect to the current intermedia scene\n• Creative and social potential of audio creativity\n• Radio potential challenged by the internet\n• Audio creativity challenging mainstream radio content\n• Approaches of public service radio stations to innovative audio content\n• Independent radio initiatives as cultural and social subversion\n• The radio as musical instrument\n• Radiophony as compositional strategy\n• Visual aspects of radiophonic creation\n• Aesthetic aspects of making for radio\n• Radio making as politicsThis call is open to all\, and we wish particularly to encourage submissions from often under-represented groups in these fora\, and also creatively and collaboratively-produced articles.Furthermore\, as always\, submissions unrelated to the theme but relevant to the journal’s areas of focus are always welcome.\n\nReferences \n• Marinetti\, F. SUMMARY:First International UPISketch Competition
DESCRIPTION:Some fifty years ago\, Iannis Xenakis and his team at the CEMAMu (Centre d’Études de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales) invented the UPIC\, a computer tool for composing music with the help of drawing. Anyone\, with or without a musical background\, could compose using this very large digitizing table and its associated system. \nThe CIX decided to pursue this initial goal of opening up creativity to all audiences and has developed a new application/software called UPISketch (see here for free download). \nXenakis’s centenary is the perfect occasion for us to launch this first UPISketch International Competition\, with a total amount of 5000 € in prizes. \nGENERAL CONDITIONS \nThe competition is open to all nationalities and all ages. \nThe amateur category is reserved for non-professional musicians. \nCATEGORIES \n\nA : Amateur – UPISketch solo\nB : Professional – UPISketch solo\nC : Professional – UPISketch and mixed techniques\n\nA & B (“UPISketch Solo”): All of the material should be generated by UPISketch\, be from one or several projects using the app. However\, the final product can be edited in a digital audio workstation (DAW) and processed through reverberation and/or filtering end and/or dynamics. \nC: “UPISketch & Mixed Techniques”: The large majority of the sound material (in terms of content and duration) of the submitted work must be generated by UPISketch. It can be processed by any means. The final product could use other sources as well\, but one must be able to retrace the UPISketch material by comparing the provided UPISketch-exported sounds with the piece itself. \nNota Bene: a VST-host version of UPISketch is in the making. With this version\, any plugin will be usable for the current competition\, as long as it is installed in UPISketch itself. \nB & C: It is mandatory to provide the screen shots and exported sounds from the original UPISketch projects that were used\, along with the piece. Also\, spatialization can be added to expand stereo setups. In such cases\, please send us a multi-track audio file. \nOnly one work per applicant may be submitted. \nCollective works by more than one composer will be considered one submission. If a collective work is submitted\, none of the composers participating at the collective is allowed to submit an individual work. \nSCHEDULE \n\nOpening of submissions: March 8\, 2022\nDeadline: July 31\, 2022\nPublication of Results: September 15\, 2022\n\nA distinguished international jury will anonymously review all submissions. The jury’s decisions will be final. Names of the jury members will be posted at the same time as the results on our website and related social media. \nNo member of the jury may participate in the Competition. In addition to the three prizes in each category the jury has the right to award Honorary Mentions for works they consider of high artistic value. \nConcerts including awarded works will take place between September 28 and the end of 2022\, in France\, Greece\, and Japan (and perhaps elsewhere). \nDURATION \nThe duration of submitted work should be more than 3 minutes\, and preferably less than 20 minutes. \nSUBMISSION \nSubmission is free of charge and will consist of the following files/links emailed to upisketch@meta-xenakis.org: \n• your piece (audio file\, stereo or multitrack)\n• associated UPISketch screen captures and exported audio files from UPISketch projects (for Categories B & C)\n• rider containing diffusion setup\, technical requirements\, images\, program notes\, etc.\n• the completed and signed registration form \nPRIZES \nThree prizes will be given for each category: \n1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize \nA 500€ 300€ 200€ \nB 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nC 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nNota Bene: you are free to use any available version of UPISketch\, but please note that the main platforms for the upcoming updates and version will be OSX and Windows. \nTo be informed when any new versions are released\, please check for updates on the CIX website and on our Facebook page. \nVideo tutorials are available in the application itself\, or online at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvYFZ0B8tIk-1ch53Cb2LMTAA3Uoc6z1Y

SUMMARY:LAST DAYS! Call for testimonies/tributes: In memoriam Joel Chadabe
DESCRIPTION:Joel Chadabe (1938-2021) was not only a pioneer in electronic music in his own right\, he was a major champion of others’ music as well\, with an inimitable entrepreneurial spirit. \n\n  \n\n\nPhoto: Carlo Carnevali (courtesy of the estate of Joel Chadabe) \nJoel was a close friend of Iannis Xenakis\, the two having first met in Berlin in 1964 as Ford Foundation Fellows\, and they always remained close. In 1997\, Joel released\, on his EMF (Electronic Music Foundation) label\, the first CD of Xenakis’s electronic music\, which became the best-selling disc in his catalogue. More recently\, Joel’s e-publishing company Intelligent Arts entered into an agreement with Xenakis’s historic publisher Pendragon Press to release updated e-versions of the Xenakis Series in print copy (ongoing). \nIn fact\, thanks to Joel’s tireless promotion\, through his programming of concerts and other events\, including after Xenakis’s death\, Xenakis’s reputation flourished\, especially in North America. Even on his own website\, Joel dedicated a whole chapter to Xenakis\, including several citations of personal conversations between the two: https://joelchadabe.net/xenakis/ \nJoel was also a founding member of the Xenakis Project of the Americas (XPA). \nAn Open Call for Testimonials and/or Tributes to Joel Chadabe\nTo honor Joel’s contributions\, XPA\, as a partner in the Meta—Xenakis consortium\, will dedicate a special session during its leg of the marathon Symposium (September 30\, 2022\, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center\, 365 Fifth Avenue\, New York City) to him. \nTherefore\, we are making an international Open Call for testimonials and/or tributes to Joel Chadabe. These can be photos\, videos\, recordings\, an improvisation\, a poem\, etc. honoring and remembering the man and musician who has touched so many of us. Because of our anticipation of a worldwide response\, we kindly request that each submission be under 3 minutes. Depending on the various media we will collect\, we will determine the most appropriate way of presenting this compilation/montage both in New York and on our website. \nDEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: June 1\, 2022\nPlease submit to: joeltribute@meta-xenakis.org
