SUMMARY:Australia: Sonorous VI – Camilla Hannan + Warren Burt
DESCRIPTION:MESS is back at The Substation with the sixth iteration of our Sonorous multi-channel commissions. This concert features two extraordinary artists who have both developed and refined unique sonic palettes across decades of dedication to their respective crafts. \n  \nCamilla Hannan is an Australian sound artist who works primarily with field recordings. She processes these recordings into abstract representations of place and experience. She investigates the construction of urban and natural environments sonically\, and spatially\, morphing these elements into new sound worlds. Camilla’s work is centred on a deep fascination with the way in which we listen to our environment and how this listening impacts upon our micro and macro worlds. \nFor Sonorous VI\, Camilla will conjure a sonic world\, one in which we inhabit both individually and collectively – a reflection of this place in time and the soundtrack to our internal manifestos. \nWarren Burt was born in Baltimore Maryland in 1949. He was raised in northern New York State and studied at the State University of New York at Albany from 1967-71 (with Joel Chadabe) and at the University of California\, San Diego from 1971-75 (with Kenneth Gaburo and Robert Erickson). He moved to Australia in 1975 and was involved in setting up the Music Department at La Trobe University from 1975 to 1981. He is a composer\, performer\, writer\, instrument builder\, video artist and more. Among recent performances was Darshan with a Pelican\, an 8 channel acousmatic composition\, which was performed at the GRM Paris concert series. \nWarren’s new work for MESS will be an 8-channel live mix using many different sound sources and tuning systems. The use of chaotic equations as both sound and pattern sources will be part of the piece. He hopes to\, in the words of his friend Dary John Mizelle\, pile pattern on pattern until chaos results. \nWarren is also a member of the EMF Institute Board of Directors\, founded by Joel Chadabe.

SUMMARY:UK: Convergence 2022

A former member of Chick Corea’s bands Origin and The Vigil\, and with over 40 albums and a Grammy Award to his credit\, Garland is internationally respected across jazz and classical music as performer\, composer\, orchestrator and educator in genres spanning symphonic and small combo blends of notated and improvised music-making.  Tim Garland’s Duology\, with Jason Rebello (piano) will perform in an evening concert at Convergence 2022. \nConcerts will be presented in DMU PACE Studios 1 and 2 and at The Venue@DMU \nAudiovisual and Installation work will be presented at two of Leicester’s central city Cultural Quarter venues: Phoenix Arts and LCB Depot. \nAbout us\nDe Montfort University is located in the heart of the city of Leicester—one of the UK’s most vibrantly multicultural cities.  A city with Roman heritage\, Leicester is also the recently established resting place of King Richard III\, the controversial subject of one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. \nDe Montfort University’s MTI2 Institute for Sonic Creativity has been established as a leading international centre for electroacoustic music for over two decades and builds on Leicester’s reputation as a focal point for experimental music-making. A music department at the university was founded by the composer Gavin Bryars\, focusing DMU as a hotbed of experimentalism and innovation. That imperative extends today in the Institute for Sonic Creativity—founded in 1999 with wide-ranging artistic practice embracing many forms of digital and post-digital forms of sonic art: acousmatic music\, audiovisual and installation art\, live coding\, interactive performance\, electronic instrument construction\, AI\, spatial audio\, radiogenic art and plunderphonics.

SUMMARY:Poland: 65th Warsaw Autumn
DESCRIPTION:CONNECTIONS – is the watchword of this year’s\, 65th edition of the ‘Warsaw Autumn’. We work as a team\, bringing together the efforts of performers\, programmers\, and organisers. Connections are constructive\, in defiance of the engineering of social divisions. We are with Ukraine and its artists. We present music that is not indifferent to the struggle with life’s hardships and solitude\, brought about both by large-scale processes and by everyday life. \nDETAILS: https://warszawska-jesien.art.pl/en/2022/news/64–warszawska-jesien- \nWarsaw Autumn (Warszawska Jesień) is a festival with a long tradition and a true witness to music history. It is the only contemporary music festival in Poland on an international scale and with an international status. The Festival is organised by the Polish Composers’ Union. The Repertoire Committee\, an independent body appointed by the Union’s Board\, determines the program of each edition of the festival. Warsaw Autumn is\, therefore\, an international and nonprofit festival of a nongovernmental association.

SUMMARY:First International UPISketch Competition
DESCRIPTION:Some fifty years ago\, Iannis Xenakis and his team at the CEMAMu (Centre d’Études de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales) invented the UPIC\, a computer tool for composing music with the help of drawing. Anyone\, with or without a musical background\, could compose using this very large digitizing table and its associated system. \nThe CIX decided to pursue this initial goal of opening up creativity to all audiences and has developed a new application/software called UPISketch (see here for free download). \nXenakis’s centenary is the perfect occasion for us to launch this first UPISketch International Competition\, with a total amount of 5000 € in prizes. \nGENERAL CONDITIONS \nThe competition is open to all nationalities and all ages. \nThe amateur category is reserved for non-professional musicians. \nCATEGORIES \n\nA : Amateur – UPISketch solo\nB : Professional – UPISketch solo\nC : Professional – UPISketch and mixed techniques\n\nA & B (“UPISketch Solo”): All of the material should be generated by UPISketch\, be from one or several projects using the app. However\, the final product can be edited in a digital audio workstation (DAW) and processed through reverberation and/or filtering end and/or dynamics. \nC: “UPISketch & Mixed Techniques”: The large majority of the sound material (in terms of content and duration) of the submitted work must be generated by UPISketch. It can be processed by any means. The final product could use other sources as well\, but one must be able to retrace the UPISketch material by comparing the provided UPISketch-exported sounds with the piece itself. \nNota Bene: a VST-host version of UPISketch is in the making. With this version\, any plugin will be usable for the current competition\, as long as it is installed in UPISketch itself. \nB & C: It is mandatory to provide the screen shots and exported sounds from the original UPISketch projects that were used\, along with the piece. Also\, spatialization can be added to expand stereo setups. In such cases\, please send us a multi-track audio file. \nOnly one work per applicant may be submitted. \nCollective works by more than one composer will be considered one submission. If a collective work is submitted\, none of the composers participating at the collective is allowed to submit an individual work. \nSCHEDULE \n\nOpening of submissions: March 8\, 2022\nDeadline: July 31\, 2022\nPublication of Results: September 15\, 2022\n\nA distinguished international jury will anonymously review all submissions. The jury’s decisions will be final. Names of the jury members will be posted at the same time as the results on our website and related social media. \nNo member of the jury may participate in the Competition. In addition to the three prizes in each category the jury has the right to award Honorary Mentions for works they consider of high artistic value. \nConcerts including awarded works will take place between September 28 and the end of 2022\, in France\, Greece\, and Japan (and perhaps elsewhere). \nDURATION \nThe duration of submitted work should be more than 3 minutes\, and preferably less than 20 minutes. \nSUBMISSION \nSubmission is free of charge and will consist of the following files/links emailed to upisketch@meta-xenakis.org: \n• your piece (audio file\, stereo or multitrack)\n• associated UPISketch screen captures and exported audio files from UPISketch projects (for Categories B & C)\n• rider containing diffusion setup\, technical requirements\, images\, program notes\, etc.\n• the completed and signed registration form \nPRIZES \nThree prizes will be given for each category: \n1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize \nA 500€ 300€ 200€ \nB 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nC 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nNota Bene: you are free to use any available version of UPISketch\, but please note that the main platforms for the upcoming updates and version will be OSX and Windows. \nTo be informed when any new versions are released\, please check for updates on the CIX website and on our Facebook page. \nVideo tutorials are available in the application itself\, or online at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvYFZ0B8tIk-1ch53Cb2LMTAA3Uoc6z1Y

SUMMARY:USA: The Ear Hut + Listen Ahead
DESCRIPTION:A listening station created by Miya Masaoka\nThe Ear Hut was originally commissioned by Sonic Innovations\, a program of the Caramoor Center for Art and Music in Katonah\, New York\, for composer and sound artist Miya Masaoka and was exhibited there in 2019-2021. \nThe Ear Hut is a listening space\, a contemplative space that directs the attention of the viewer towards an awareness of their sense of listening over their sense of sight\, and how this shift in emphasis might be experienced in an impactful way. \n
