SUMMARY:FOLLOW MY SCORE 2022 FALL SEASON
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce Follow My Score 2022! Fms22 is an effort to promote and curate many works by living composers. Approximately 80 works will be selected by the Score Follower jury and curators. Selected works will be made into “score follower videos” by our production team\, and uploaded onto our YouTube channels. We hold this call semiannually\, once in the Fall (Aug 15—Sep 15\, with results by Nov 15)\, and once in the Spring (Feb 15—Mar 15\, with results by May 15). If you want to make a score video in the meantime\, you can build one in your browser now: scorefol.io. This project is not a commissioning contest.

SUMMARY:First International UPISketch Competition
DESCRIPTION:Some fifty years ago\, Iannis Xenakis and his team at the CEMAMu (Centre d’Études de Mathématique et Automatique Musicales) invented the UPIC\, a computer tool for composing music with the help of drawing. Anyone\, with or without a musical background\, could compose using this very large digitizing table and its associated system. \nThe CIX decided to pursue this initial goal of opening up creativity to all audiences and has developed a new application/software called UPISketch (see here for free download). \nXenakis’s centenary is the perfect occasion for us to launch this first UPISketch International Competition\, with a total amount of 5000 € in prizes. \nGENERAL CONDITIONS \nThe competition is open to all nationalities and all ages. \nThe amateur category is reserved for non-professional musicians. \nCATEGORIES \n\nA : Amateur – UPISketch solo\nB : Professional – UPISketch solo\nC : Professional – UPISketch and mixed techniques\n\nA & B (“UPISketch Solo”): All of the material should be generated by UPISketch\, be from one or several projects using the app. However\, the final product can be edited in a digital audio workstation (DAW) and processed through reverberation and/or filtering end and/or dynamics. \nC: “UPISketch & Mixed Techniques”: The large majority of the sound material (in terms of content and duration) of the submitted work must be generated by UPISketch. It can be processed by any means. The final product could use other sources as well\, but one must be able to retrace the UPISketch material by comparing the provided UPISketch-exported sounds with the piece itself. \nNota Bene: a VST-host version of UPISketch is in the making. With this version\, any plugin will be usable for the current competition\, as long as it is installed in UPISketch itself. \nB & C: It is mandatory to provide the screen shots and exported sounds from the original UPISketch projects that were used\, along with the piece. Also\, spatialization can be added to expand stereo setups. In such cases\, please send us a multi-track audio file. \nOnly one work per applicant may be submitted. \nCollective works by more than one composer will be considered one submission. If a collective work is submitted\, none of the composers participating at the collective is allowed to submit an individual work. \nSCHEDULE \n\nOpening of submissions: March 8\, 2022\nDeadline: July 31\, 2022\nPublication of Results: September 15\, 2022\n\nA distinguished international jury will anonymously review all submissions. The jury’s decisions will be final. Names of the jury members will be posted at the same time as the results on our website and related social media. \nNo member of the jury may participate in the Competition. In addition to the three prizes in each category the jury has the right to award Honorary Mentions for works they consider of high artistic value. \nConcerts including awarded works will take place between September 28 and the end of 2022\, in France\, Greece\, and Japan (and perhaps elsewhere). \nDURATION \nThe duration of submitted work should be more than 3 minutes\, and preferably less than 20 minutes. \nSUBMISSION \nSubmission is free of charge and will consist of the following files/links emailed to upisketch@meta-xenakis.org: \n• your piece (audio file\, stereo or multitrack)\n• associated UPISketch screen captures and exported audio files from UPISketch projects (for Categories B & C)\n• rider containing diffusion setup\, technical requirements\, images\, program notes\, etc.\n• the completed and signed registration form \nPRIZES \nThree prizes will be given for each category: \n1st Prize 2nd Prize 3rd Prize \nA 500€ 300€ 200€ \nB 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nC 1000€ 600€ 400€ \nNota Bene: you are free to use any available version of UPISketch\, but please note that the main platforms for the upcoming updates and version will be OSX and Windows. \nTo be informed when any new versions are released\, please check for updates on the CIX website and on our Facebook page. \nVideo tutorials are available in the application itself\, or online at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvYFZ0B8tIk-1ch53Cb2LMTAA3Uoc6z1Y

SUMMARY:USA: The Ear Hut + Listen Ahead
DESCRIPTION:A listening station created by Miya Masaoka\nThe Ear Hut was originally commissioned by Sonic Innovations\, a program of the Caramoor Center for Art and Music in Katonah\, New York\, for composer and sound artist Miya Masaoka and was exhibited there in 2019-2021. \nThe Ear Hut is a listening space\, a contemplative space that directs the attention of the viewer towards an awareness of their sense of listening over their sense of sight\, and how this shift in emphasis might be experienced in an impactful way. \n

SUMMARY:LAST DAYS! Call for testimonies/tributes: In memoriam Joel Chadabe
DESCRIPTION:Joel Chadabe (1938-2021) was not only a pioneer in electronic music in his own right\, he was a major champion of others’ music as well\, with an inimitable entrepreneurial spirit. \n\n  \n\n\nPhoto: Carlo Carnevali (courtesy of the estate of Joel Chadabe) \nJoel was a close friend of Iannis Xenakis\, the two having first met in Berlin in 1964 as Ford Foundation Fellows\, and they always remained close. In 1997\, Joel released\, on his EMF (Electronic Music Foundation) label\, the first CD of Xenakis’s electronic music\, which became the best-selling disc in his catalogue. More recently\, Joel’s e-publishing company Intelligent Arts entered into an agreement with Xenakis’s historic publisher Pendragon Press to release updated e-versions of the Xenakis Series in print copy (ongoing). \nIn fact\, thanks to Joel’s tireless promotion\, through his programming of concerts and other events\, including after Xenakis’s death\, Xenakis’s reputation flourished\, especially in North America. Even on his own website\, Joel dedicated a whole chapter to Xenakis\, including several citations of personal conversations between the two: https://joelchadabe.net/xenakis/ \nJoel was also a founding member of the Xenakis Project of the Americas (XPA). \nAn Open Call for Testimonials and/or Tributes to Joel Chadabe\nTo honor Joel’s contributions\, XPA\, as a partner in the Meta—Xenakis consortium\, will dedicate a special session during its leg of the marathon Symposium (September 30\, 2022\, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center\, 365 Fifth Avenue\, New York City) to him. \nTherefore\, we are making an international Open Call for testimonials and/or tributes to Joel Chadabe. These can be photos\, videos\, recordings\, an improvisation\, a poem\, etc. honoring and remembering the man and musician who has touched so many of us. Because of our anticipation of a worldwide response\, we kindly request that each submission be under 3 minutes. Depending on the various media we will collect\, we will determine the most appropriate way of presenting this compilation/montage both in New York and on our website. \nDEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: June 1\, 2022\nPlease submit to: joeltribute@meta-xenakis.org

SUMMARY:Canada: Polytope XXI - Tribute to Iannis Xenakis
DESCRIPTION:Polytope XXI is a concert in homage to Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001)\, architect\, engineer and composer\, whose works for percussion are landmarks of 20th Century repertoire. It is also the name that composers Myriam Boucher and Dominic Thibault have given to their monumental instrumental project: a sort of giant\, electronically augmented\, audio-luminescent harp\, whose strings will be struck by the percussionists of Sixtrum. Architect Stéphanie Castonguay and her collaborator Éric Deschênes (In Situ) will design the structure of the instrument\, that will be equipped with various sensors to capture and amplify vibrations\, and to control the integrated light and video system. \nThis project finds its inspiration in the first Polytope imagined by Iannis Xenakis\, an ‘electronic sculpture combining light\, music and structure’\, that was presented inside the French Pavilion during Expo67 – the Universal and International Exhibition that took place in Montreal in 1967. This installation formed a gigantic web of cables suspended in the central space of the pavilion\, each cable bearing a multitude of flashing lights that were synchronized with a musical tape – creating an artistic work inscribed in space and made of multiple layers of sound and light. This project was rooted in a scientific\, architectural\, and musical vision: a unique integration of science and art. \nThe second part of the program will be dedicated to the monumental work Pleiades\, for 6 percussionists\, that was on the repertoire of the very first concert of Sixtrum\, and that will close the 15th season of the Montreal ensemble. \nAcknowledgments : CIRMMT – Agile Seed Funding

SUMMARY:Greece: Iannis Xenakis: Pleiades & Persephassa
DESCRIPTION:It has been said on several occasions that\, thanks to percussion\, Xenakis reintroduced the problem of rhythm which we thought had disappeared from contemporary music. Architect\, engineer and composer\, this giant of composition writes music whose complex and harmonious structure constitutes a paradox with the explosive energy that is extracted from it. \nFrom the close collaboration of Xenakis with the Percussions de Strasbourg were born\, ten years apart\, two fundamental works: Persephassa in 1969 and Pléiades in 1979. The first\, working on the spatialization of sound\, is a sound choreography. The second is one of the composer’s finest pieces. The richness of the timbres\, the freedom and the coherence of the composition make this work a unique rhythmic adventure. \nIn 2022\, Les Percussions de Strasbourg will celebrate both the composer’s centenary and the ensemble’s sixty years. \nPROGRAM\nIannis XENAKIS – Pléiades (1979) 45 ′\nintermission\nIannis XENAKIS – Persephassa (1969) 35 ′

SUMMARY:USA: Yvonne Rainer’s "Remembering And Dismembering Trio A" With Brittany Bailey / David Behrman’s "Open Space With Brass" With Ed Bear & Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:ISSUE & The Clemente present an evening of pioneering work from choreographer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer and composer David Behrman. Highlighting the artists’ work interpreted and presented by a new generation of artists\, the evening features choreographer and performer Brittany Bailey performing Remembering and Dismembering Trio A (1966 – 2020)\, with excerpts from Peter Schjeldahl’s “77 Sunset Me.” \nThe program also features David Behrman’s Open Space with Brass\, performed by Ed Bear and an ensemble under the direction of Chris McIntyre. The piece was originally commissioned for the final performances of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (performed with TILT Brass) at the Park Avenue Armory in December\, 2011. \n… \nDavid Behrman’s Open Space with Brass follows in the tradition of electroacoustic sound supported throughout the history of Merce Cunningham Dance Company. The piece also refers to the antiphonal music that Giovanni Gabrieli created for the Basilica di San Marco in Venice at the turn of the 17th Century. Gabrieli’s work made such specific use of the cathedral’s acoustics that groups of brass instruments situated in opposing choir lofts could be heard with clarity at distant points. Interactive music software\, originally made for the site-specific 15-channel sound system that was in use at the Park Avenue Armory\, linked the acoustic and electronic elements of Open Space: a 6-piece ensemble of trumpets and trombones filling the enormous Armory Drill Hall space with live and digitally processed sound. Behrman has recently reorganized elements of this software to be more accessible for other musicians to play. Ed Bear\, who returns to ISSUE after an ambitious re-staging of John Cage’s Variations VII in 2016\, manipulates the software\, while trombonist Chris McIntyre leads an ensemble of cello (Aliya Ultan)\, bass clarinet (Madison Greenstone)\, and trumpet (Alexandria Smith). \nThe evening will conclude with a Q&A with Yvonne Rainer & David Behrman moderated by Chris McIntyre. They will discuss the history\, transition\, and legacy of their work as well as the process of teaching\, learning\, and presenting the pieces.
